The Gran Castello at Rabat, Gozo

Gran Castello Cover 550An appreciation of the civil architectural legacy

Notwithstanding its colossal proportions and awe-inspiring aura, the Gran Castello at Rabat, Gozo is intrinsically a shadow of its past. Just under one fifth of the former cluster of civilian properties, that is non military or religious buildings, made it to the present day. These are of great architectural merit on an individual and a collective basis. Indeed, the main stylistic developments that characterized popular civil architecture in the Maltese Islands from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries are mirrored at Gozo’s Gran Castello.

This publication endeavours to showcase many of these architectural styles and is an appreciation of the civil architectural legacy of the Gran Castello at Rabat, Gozo.

This book brings together some impressive Gozitan talent.

The author, Godwin Vella, curator at the Inquisitor’s Palace, a Heritage Malta site, was also a previous Secretary of Wirt Għawdex and still very actively involved with the society.

Many of the pictures in the book are the work of Daniel Cilia, well-renowed photographer and member of Wirt Għawdex.

Nicoline Sagona, Manager of the Gozo area office of Heritage Malta and established artist, created pencil and wash drawings to be included  in this book.

Dr. Joe Zammit Ciantar, author and educator, edited and designed the publication.   All of them volunteered their time and material for the success of this publication.
